Caring for Bearded Dragons: What to Do When Your Beardie Looks or Acts Sick
The number one mistake made in caring for Bearded Dragons is providing a habitat for him with a temperature that’s either too hot or too cold. Either one can make a Beardie behave or appear sick. That’s the first step you should take when he’s not acting like himself. Next, you’ll want to check his appearance for anything that looks off. Look for the obvious signs first. Does he appear to have parasites on his body? Examine his stool for parasites.
When caring for Bearded Dragons, keep in mind that they’re not like cats or dogs in that they will traipse through their own poop. If they do have internal parasites, it’s easy for it to be passed from one Beardie to another in the same enclosure through food that’s come in contact with the stool. If you notice that your Beardie is bloated and having difficulty moving around, that can be a sign that he’s got food lodged in his system. Just like a traffic jam causes a backup on the freeway, lodged food backs everything up and makes life pretty uncomfortable for the poor fellow.
Caring for Bearded Dragons with something lodged in his system takes a lot of attention on your part. You’ll need to soak him in a warm bath and feel around his sides. Hard lumps can be an indication that he’s stopped up. With the soft pad of your fingers gently massage where hard spot is. If your Beardie is dragging around and is low on energy, you can try increasing the amount of calcium for your Beardie.
