You might have seen signs “Buy Bearded Dragon” and decided you wanted to own a pet lizard. Going to buy a Bearded Dragon can be an exciting experience, especially if you’ve never owned an exotic pet. But it can also be a disappointing experience unless you know how to make sure you get a healthy, happy lizard. Beardies are available through a variety of avenues including reptile or pet stores and they’re also for sale through breeders as well.

But the tough part isn’t seeing the ‘Buy Bearded Dragon’ sign, the tough part are the signs you might not know you should see. If you’re a novice exotic pet owner, you probably don’t know that lizards will clue you in to what their overall health is before you even take one home. There are obvious outer signs. A Beardie that does a lot of sitting still and acts disinterested in his surroundings is a sign that he’s not well. When you pick him up, check his sides. Does he look like a normal size? A female Beardie that looks bloated can have an egg impaction that could require surgical removal. What kind of shape is the Beardie in? Is his skin healthy and smooth or does it show trauma like wounds that haven’t healed? Before you select a Beardie, ask other Beardie owners for tips on how to find the right lizard. If you don’t know any other lizard owners, look for an online forum and ask questions before you buy.
