Berded Dragons

The berded dragons you find in pet shops, at reptile shows and among breeders all have origins that date back many years. The ones that you can purchase as pets for yourself, a family member or a friend are usually found to be members of the Pogona Vitticeps variety. There are other breeds of bearded dragons but you’re more likely to get one from the Pogona species as the others are rarely found to survive being bred as pets. Native to Australia, this lovable lizard makes a good pet for any adult as well as a child who might show interest in raising a member of the reptile family since it’s easily trainable.

Originally, the colors of the Beardie weren’t as bright as they’ve been bred to be in captivity. Much like the cross breeding of roses to get more vibrant colors, so some breeders will choose to mate Beardies in hopes of getting richer, darker variations to the skin tones. But in their natural habitat, a brightly colored Beardie would become lunch for his enemies.

If you’ve done your homework and decided that you want berded dragons as pets, then you’re ready for the next step-locating the right Beardie for you and taking him home. No one wants to get a pet only to discover it’s sick or has a bunch of parasites. There are a few simple steps you should adhere to get a healthy lizard. When you see the lizard, make sure it’s active and appears to be engaged or interested in his environment. If the Beardie darts away from you or won’t watch to see what you’re doing as you approach, it could be a sign that he’s not healthy. Healthy Beardies are not lethargic but are eager to explore their surroundings and their unexpected guests.
