Bearded Lizards
Bearded lizards are fascinating creatures and are one of the most interactive reptiles you can find. They have all sorts of ways that they communicate and just watching some of their antics can make you laugh out loud. For example, they have a way of gaping open their mouth when they’re excited that’ll remind you of a kid on Christmas morning. The gaping mouth, if accompanied by his beard puffing out can mean the lizard is feeling a bit aggressive but since Beardies aren’t normally biters, don’t let that trait scare you off from owning one.
They also like to put their tongues where their curiosity is. If you put a new object in their cage, one of the first things the Beardie will do is approach it cautiously and flick his tongue out to touch it. This action is his way of figuring out what’s going on around him. If you’ve ever watched snakes before, you’ll notice that snakes often flick their tongues out. The Beardies do it for the same reason. It’s one of the ways they connect to the world and learn from it.
Not all Bearded lizards will always have the same reaction. But knowing how the average Beardie responds will help you learn more about your own pet and get to understand what it is he’s doing. If your Beardie begins to do what’s called arm waving, it’s a signal that he may be doing something very human of him. He may be stretching out those arms to work out some inner feelings such as stress in the same way humans often stretch or go work out on the treadmill to get some stress relief. But for fun and as a way to follow what your Beardie is saying, spend some time watching his actions.
