Bearded Dragon Open Mouth
When you see a Bearded Dragon, open mouth running at you, it can have a couple of different meanings. It can mean that he’s learned that you’re his primary source of food and much like a dog runs when he hears the food bag rattle, the Beardie will come running to you. Or it can mean that something’s going on that he doesn’t like and he’s got his mouth open to show that threat that he’s one tough little lizard and not to mess with him. One way you can tell if he’s agitated or feeling like there’s a threat is by watching his actions. A Beardie that’s not happy with the situation will often extend his beard as a way to warn the threat.
The behaviors of this exotic lizard are usually the same no matter what the species is but not every single Beardie will react the same in each situation. Some Beardies might choose to act submissive and scurry away from a situation they don’t feel comfortable with while others will stand their ground and stare down the threat. Because of their size, you should know that what’s a non-threat to you-such as your dog jumping playfully around your legs, the Beardie will see as a matter of life and death so it’s best to keep other animals out of the vicinity of the cage.
When you see the Bearded Dragon, open mouth with beard extended, it can look a little like a baby bird opening its mouth to accept a bite of food. But unless you know for sure that your pet doesn’t bite, don’t attempt to stick your finger in his mouth during this behavior and teach any small children not to stick their fingers in his mouth either. Beardies are sweet creatures but any animal can bite.
