Most lizard owners are well meaning but don’t really understand what’s involved in making sure their Beardie reaches the maximum possibility of his years of life. The requirements to keep Beardie, while not difficult, are detailed. The precise needs have to be met or owners, especially those who’ve never dealt with exotic pets before, can end up accidentally killing their pet. There’s a fine balance that must be followed in order to give your pet what he needs.

While the Bearded Dragon lifespan is slated to be approximately 10 years, with excellent nurturing, there’s no reason to expect your Beardie can’t live longer than the average Beardie. The standard care that all Beardies need fall into the same categories such as a home, furnishings for that home, the right temperatures, lighting and food and water. It’s especially important that you pay attention to the furnishings inside your Beardie’s enclosure. He has to have a place that he can perch preferably near the heat or light source so he can bask. While you can use remnants of carpet as a substrate, be aware that if any of the pilings come loose and the Beardie swallows them, it can make him ill.
