Space is an important part of a Bearded Dragon enclosure. He’s got to have the room he needs to roam around. If you place your Beardie inside cramped quarters, it won’t be long before you’ll notice him hitting the sides of the enclosure or acting in an aggressive manner. This is an outward indication that there’s a three fold problem going on inside him-he’s stressed, he’s feeling the effects of the too small area and he wants out. A 40 gallon enclosure is the very least you should use if you’re bringing home an adult Beardie. Anything less than that is simply too small.

On the outside of your Bearded Dragon enclosure, you’ll want to put up a background. This will give your Beardie a sense of privacy. You can find pictures specifically geared toward reptile terrarium and vivariums that will work or you can use a light colored cardstock. Since Beardies don’t have the greatest depth perception, don’t choose a background paper with images on it that he can’t grasp.

Using a solid cover is a beginner mistake than kill your Beardie because it can get too hot inside. So when you place a top on your Bearded Dragon enclosure, make sure it’s one that can provide plenty of ventilation. A terrarium or a vivarium doesn’t have to be an elaborate set up although you can find some that look like pieces of furniture. The main purpose of the enclosure is for it to meet the needs of your Beardie.
